Schedule · FAQ · Faculty Applications

We are THRILLED to be able to bring you a full Christian Writers Conference in the stunning Santa Cruz mountains. Nestled in the redwoods just a short drive from the coast, the Mount Hermon Christian Conference Center is one of the most beautiful venues on the west coast.

This year, stepping into the legacy created by Mount Hermon’s now-ended 50-year legacy of Christian Writing conferences, Inspire will be continuing that historical tradition of serving and equipping writers with the full support and blessing of the Mount Hermon organization.

For those who attended Mount Hermon’s own past writers’ conferences, much will look the same: Major Morning Tracks, afternoon workshops, and evening keynotes will continue. And many beloved and respected faculty members will be joining us, along with some fresh new faces from around the United States. A special new add-on Mentorship Track will also be offered for those who are wanting one on one time with industry rock stars.

Inspire Christian Writers, the sponsor of this event, is a nonprofit organization whose whole remit is to encourage and equip writers through a variety of avenues (critique groups, our annual anthology, writing contests, our award-winning blog, workshops, MasterCraft classes, and discounts for services and events like this one).

We look forward to fellowshipping and learning with you among the beautiful redwoods!

Cost

Basic cost of the conference (including accommodation, all meals, major morning tracks, workshops, etc.) is from $1,165 to $1,595 (after discount) for members of Inspire Christian Writers. For non-members, the range is $1,185 to $1,695.

Schedule

The anticipated/tentative schedule is now available, which is subject to change. View Schedule

Major Morning Tracks

These are conference-long tracks focusing on one of five major subjects/genres:

  • Nonfiction, with Lisa Crayton,
  • Fiction, with James L. Rubart,
  • Memoir, with Cindy Coloma,
  • YA/Fantasy/Speculative, with Morgan Busse,
  • Publishing A to Z, with Barb Roose.

The goal of Major Morning Tracks is to give you in-depth information about all angles of a subject/genre, as well as some practical application.

NEW for this conference is that we will have three mini-workshops embedded in each morning track. A specialist will speak specifically into your focus/genre on the topics of Marketing (with Blythe Daniel), Publishing Options (with Robynne Miller), and the Spiritual Call of a Writer (with Jevon Bolden). Because the specialists will be able to narrow the focus to a genre, they will be able to give more specific and detailed information than would be possible for a regular workshop.

Mentoring Track

NEW for this conference, and with VERY limited spaces, this is an exciting addition. For writers needing specific and very focused input, this add-on option is perfect. You will meet each day of the conference during the morning hours for a consult with your assigned mentor. Each day will focus on one aspect of your writing journey and will include an assessment of your writing, platform, and marketing options, as well as next steps. Our mentors include:

  • Kim Bangs, the Editorial Director of Chosen Books (Division of Baker Publishing),
  • Mick Silva, a Senior Acquisitions Editor at Zondervan,
  • Cynthia Ruchti, an award-winning author and top Books and Such literary agent.

So you know you will be receiving top-notch advice and input from your mentor!

This track requires an in-depth questionnaire filled out and submitted at least one week before the conference starts, as well as a writing sample of up to three chapters (no more than 10,000 words, but at least 2,000).

Cost: $495 above conference rate for Inspire Christian Writers members, $545 for nonmembers.

Space is EXTREMELY limited for this option. UPDATE 05/20: The Mentoring Track is nearly sold out.

Workshops

We will be having more than forty afternoon workshops across the four-day conference. Topics will range from craft to marketing and platform to niche subjects to various aspects of publishing. From beginner to career writer, there will be something for everyone.

All faculty will have either: a degree or professional qualification in the subject taught or quantifiable success in their workshop area. Currently, our workshop faculty include:

  • Bob Hostetler, award-winning author and agent with the Steve Laube agency,
  • Steve Laube, founder of the Steve Laube literary agency,
  • Sarah Sundin, award-winning historical fiction author.

Evening Program

Each evening after dinner, we will meet in the beautiful auditorium for worship and an inspirational message from one of four keynote speakers: A writer (Robynne Miller), an editor (Kim Bangs), an agent (Bob Hostetler), and a very, very special guest (Tricia Goyer).

Accommodation

Mount Hermon’s lodging options are hotel-like rooms which come in three levels: Economy (basic accommodation with private bath), Standard (upgraded accommodation with private bath), and Deluxe (highest grade and largest rooms, with beds made upon arrival). You will be reserving either a single room with a private bathroom or a bed in a shared room (double or triple) with a private bathroom. You do not need to have a roommate to register for a shared room, as one will be assigned for you. If you would like to room with a specific person, there is space to enter the person’s name during checkout. Though we will do our best to assign preferred roommates, we cannot guarantee this.

Inspire Member Discount

If you are an Inspire Christian Writers Member in good standing at the time of the conference, you will be refunded $100 within one month of the conference end. If you are also enrolled on the add-on Mentoring Track, you will receive an additional $50 refund within one month of the conference end.

Though it is best to secure annual membership via the Inspire website, there will be opportunity to enroll at the conference should you wish. Annual Membership is $50, and the conference discount is $100, so it’s more than worth it to join!

Pandemic/Potential Cancelations

After this last year and a half, we have all learned how quickly things can change. At the moment, we anticipate being able to hold this in-person conference with no issue. We will, of course, be following all guidelines in place at the time to ensure the safest possible environment.

If something does change, however, and the conference does need to be postponed, all monies received will move forward to the next year’s conference. Per Mt. Hermon’s policy in this situation, they will work to reschedule the event. If rolling monies forward is a hardship for you, we will work to find an amenable solution for you.

For non-pandemic related cancelations, Mount Hermon has a very strict refund policy we must follow, which is:

  • From time of registration to 121 days prior to conference, 75% of registration fee will be refunded
  • From 120 to 91 days prior to conference, 50% will be refunded
  • From 90 to 61 days, 25% will be refunded
  • Less than 61 days prior to conference, no refunds are made
